Properties: German chamomile essential oil is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties. The main constituent of German chamomile is a naturally occurring profen which is related to the synthetic painkiller, ibuprofen.
Horses with allergies resulting in itchy skin, bumps and eruptions, often select German chamomile which is thought to relieve the itch and cool the skin.
When applied to the skin, the characteristic inky blue colour of the chamomile is absorbed as it is needed until the skin stains blue, signifying enough has been applied.
Other conditions where horses often select German chamomile often end in -itus, such as laminitis, colitis etc, with the exception of cystitis where yarrow is often preferred. German chamomile is also favoured by horses when they have stomach disorders, such as ulcers, especially when the cause is nervous in origin.
